California and Tuberculosis

John mentioned sanatoriums in today's lecture, and I just thought I'd add that dry and sunny California was thought to have the ideal climate for recovery, for those who could afford the journey west.

For a period after the arrival of the railroad (so people could get there), but before the widespread arrival of the motor car, Los Angeles was promoted as a 'health resort' because of its clean air.......
